NEGRONI [IBA]

The Negroni is based on a cocktail named “The Americano” which was first served, as far as we know, in Milano, Italy, in the 1860’s by Gaspare Campari’s bar.

The cocktail was originally known as the “Milano-Torino” – Campari from Milan (Milano) and Cinzano from Turin (Torino). During Prohibition, the Italians noticed a surge of American tourists, who enjoyed the cocktail. As a compliment to American visitors, the cocktail became known as the “Americano” later on.

Today Negroni is often consumed as a pre-dinner cocktail to stimulate the appetite for dinner. This Italian concoction was invented in the early 1900s. Mixed with gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, it was named after Camillo Negroni in Florence who always ordered the same cocktail. Aperitif is a European invention and it came to America in the early 1900s.
